"Kelis Was Here" at Santos Party House
For those unfamiliar with her work (and really, who doesn't know the raspily-rad singer), Kelis let New York City know that she was here to entertain last night at Santos Party House. With her album, Flesh Tone, due out July 6 (and first since 2006's Kelis Was Here), a steamy night in late April was the perfect time for the NYC-native to showcase a repertoire of old favorites and upcoming hits.
The evening began with a round from another local gal on the rise. Mad Decent signee, Maluca, opened the night with her short set of mambo and bachata influenced hip-hop and downtown club music. From the handful of times we've caught her live, last night was easily the most comfortable and polished that the singer has appeared in a live setting. And the whips of that long braided ponytail? We can't get enough! (full set of pictures can be viewed here)
But it was Kelis who brought out the masses to lower Manhattan. Packed from the moment the doors opened, a passionate crowd of the singer's most dedicated fans were treated to a 10-song set which highlighted some of her best work from album's past, along with a number of new songs that eager listeners have been able to dig up online. While her song styles may have fluctuated over the years, one thing remains constant: Kelis is a dominant force of unbridled passion and power, balancing her bigger than life persona with a fun and free mentality while performing.
My personal highlights from her set included the performance of Trick Me, new song Brave (which will undoubtedly be a fan favorite once unleashed), a mix of Milkshake, Madonna and Major Lazer that had the crowd at a near frenzy, and the encore of Get Along With You.
