Kylie Minogue Covers HURTS' Wonderful Life on Radio 1's Live Lounge

Just a few days ago, I lauded Foals' for their cover of Swedish House Mafia's One (Your Name), which took place on Radio 1's Live Lounge.

Today, we've heard Kylie Minogue doing HURTS' Wonderful Life on the program, and there's really not much else you need to say about that, other than...

Sunday Girl - Tik Tok (Ke$ha Cover)

I'd lie if I said I hadn't ever posted about Ke$ha here in the Beaston pages prior, but that's neither here nor there, because as it stands now, she is an abrasion to the ears. On the flipside, Sunday Girl is anything but that...she of clear vocal tones and impressive original material. She's already covered Laura Branigan and MGMT, but today, she's got that Tik Tok on lock. No, really...this is supa sweet and dare we say intimately awesome. Ke$ha who now?

So here for your morning audible pleasures, you'll find the video of Sunday Girl doing a live acoustic cover of the aforementioned top-of-the-pop chart hit from earlier this year. Additionally, SG has been kind enough to give the cut away for free...so I'm merely passing it along to you with all good intentions, cause well, it blows the original out of the water.

Good on ya, lass!

Kelis Goes Acoustic for Cherrytree Records

While a good portion of my music listening over the past few months has been consumed by the superbly-danceriffic new album, Flesh Tone, from Kelis, it's pretty killer to see her pull three of the most fist-pumpingly awesome cuts from the disc pared down in an acoustic setting.

Well this just gets me all sorts of excited for her upcoming tour (with Robyn) including three NYC dates. Kelis performed 22nd Century, 4th of July (Fireworks) and Brave on a recent trip to th Cherrytree House.

Watch here.

The Pretty Reckless - EP Preview

No, I do not mind the music coming from the camp of The Pretty Reckless. Sure, it's Taylor Momsen at the helm, and while some of you may know her as a character on a popular tween-to-young adult-ish drama, the girl can toss together some fairly decent tunes as well.

During the sabbatical of a shooting schedule, Momsen, along with her trio of visibly older bandsmen, are prepped to release their self-titled debut EP on June 22. (pre-order here)

Stream the 4 tracks below, then jump after for an acoustic cut of Zombie.

Be[a]st Covers (Kelis, Shakira and Melanie Fiona)

Oh yum, yum, yum. While it's just about lunchtime here in Beastonia, we thought it fitting to dish out some tasty treats to all of you as well. Grab a plate and fork, and let's gobble up some goodies.

Shakira re-invisions The xx's Islands. Her take is called Explore, and she fiddles with her own lyrics, but the melody remains the same. Nothing but love for ol' Shaki in the minute long preview clip.

Kelis doing La Roux's In For the Kill? Yes, please and thank you. Almost kind of wish this was her song to begin with, because her husky vocals fit this acoustic version like a glove. Then again, maybe its because I'm also in a major love-fest with her new album, Flesh Tone. Read TLC Blog's review of the album here.

In Billboard's latest musical mashup series, Melanie Fiona tackles Sam Cooke's Cupid. Get ready for some super smooth sounds, from her mouth to your ears.

Graffiti6 Have a Stone in Their Heart and a Special Message for Sheena Beaston

Often, the best ideas come when you rip up the rulebook and follow what feels good. Just ask Graffiti6. The unlikely pairing of producer TommyD (he's worked with Kanye, Jay-z, Kylie and Janet!) and singer/songwriter Jamie Scott began 18 months ago as an experiment neither thought would work and has grown in a pop project so refreshingly rule-free a sense of adventure seeps from every song.

Pairing classic harmonies with a touch of "down home" ditties, the band is one who is sure to soon turn a few heads. Having just released their debut EP back in March, this 4-track sampler gives audiences an idea of who and what Graffiti6 is all about. As mate Tommy notes: "To me, Graffiti6 is party music....[but] everything about this band is a happy accident. Even now, we’re trying to plan as little as we can. It has to stay fresh."

On their initial offering, which you can purchase here, you'll find the track Stone In My Heart, a soulfully-throttling romp that is one part "O Brother Where Art Thou" and two parts "get it on up on the dance-floor".

The lads recorded an exclusive acoustic version of the track, and gave us a rad to the max shout out in the clip. Watch below!

Kid Sister - More Than Words (Extreme Cover)

In their weekly mashup Monday web series, Billboard teams up with Chicago gal, Kid Sister, for this week's installment of a rad homage to a 1990 acoustic ballad. She's known as a quick-lipped femcee, but beware, cause Melissa is about to wow you with her crooning vocals on this one.

Pairing up with her pal, accessories/jewelry designer Kerin Rose, on backing vocals, Kid Sis's voice soars through an "even more stripped down than the original" take on Extreme's popular hit, More Than Words.

Back in December, I chatted with KS and had asked her what her dream duet would be...to which she quickly responded that this, in fact, would be the one she'd want to tackle. While she doesn't grab Gary and Nuno to aid in the performance, she chats with Billboard about her love of the track and why she chose to sing it.

Watch the video below then grab the acoustic cover after that. We dig it.

Penguin Prison - Animal Animal (Live on XFM)

It's not all remixes and club thumpers here in the land of the Beast. Sure we've been known to toss a few slow jams, country crooners' tunes and acoustically sentimental cuts out every now and again, and today is no different. Our current crush is Penguin Prison, and rightfully so. With an undeniably awesome "how does he continue to crank out perfect pop songs" appeal, he's got us by the heartstrings with a live rendition of his first foray into our world.

First up, did you know that Penguin Prison, aka Chris Glover, is making his debut performance next week here in NYC? Yeah, he is. Joining Bad Brilliance, Das Racist and Solid Gold, Glover hits Mercury Lounge on April 8. (tickets here) Also, London gets lucky when the dude hits the town on April 21 and 23. Killer.

Now for this sweet premiere. Glover recently jumped on XFM to do a little talk and tune. We're psyched to give you his acoustic live rendition of Animal Animal.

Beastly Bits #33

IT. JUST. KEEPS. COMING. DOWN. The snow, that is. After a few days of weird wintry mix here in NYC, the snow finally came to a fall. And by fall, I mean a huge dump of drifts and dastardly accumulation. Fittingly enough, our inbox keeps stockpiling up thanks to a superfluous couple of days.

No complaints here. So grab a shovel, and let's start digging through the cool stuff. (puns!)

Mystery Jets, Hot Chip and Crystal Castles have been added to the bill for this summer's Estrella Levante SOS 4.8 Festival, which takes place in Murcia, Spain. More details and ticket info by jumping here.
