Crush: Beating Like a Tom Tom with The Hundred in the Hands

MeanRed's monthly party, Crush, was back in action last night...and also back at Cameo Gallery after a brief pit-stop at The Loft above Public Assembly last month. After catching Brooklyn's The Hundred in the Hands last week when they opened for The Golden Filter, there was no doubt that I could not miss their headlining performance on a hot and muggy Thursday night. Thankfully, the duo brought a bunch of cool to the space.

 

  

The Hundred in the Hands released their This Desert EP earlier this week on Warp, and last night was a welcome introduction to anyone who's yet to hear of their post-punk psych-pop. The pair of Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman weave a world of dark-tinged tunes with the former's vocals floating ever so gently on top of their intriguing arrangements.

 

Unleashing live takes on songs you'll find on the EP, like Tom Tom and Ghosts, it's fair game to let you know that you'll be hearing a lot more from THitH in the coming weeks....mainly due to the fact that they hit the States on a month-long tour with The Golden Filter. Also, The Hundred in the Hands will be my guest in the East Village Radio booth next Friday, May 28. I'm filling in on the DJ decks for my man Jason Eldridge during Accidental Rhythm at 4pm. More info to come and your tune-in is mandatory!

Crush: All Hot and Sweaty with Rafter, My Gold Mask and Hussle Club

Let it be known, I am a beast of a sweaty nature, so anything just above freezing point is more than likely to make me get all drenchified. So on a warm April evening, the monthly Meanred party, Crush, got down and dirty in The Loft above Public Assembly, aka, the sweat box. Adding to the heat of the venue was the ridiculously hot lineup of San Diego's Rafter, Chicago's My Gold Mask and New York's own Hussle Club. 

 

  

First up, the west coast's Rafter Roberts chucked out his indie dancerock tunes, jumping from behind the mic and encouraging everyone that his songs are about "sex, love, dancing and animal feelings". The latter of those actually being the name of his latest release on Asthmatic Kitty, his tune, No Fucking Around, is precisely that...no bullshit and raw radness.

  

Up next, our favorite pair from Chi-town, My Gold Mask, jumped behind their drums and strings to give us a wowin', howlin' set of their best tunes, along with a new jam that we want on our playlists immediately. Hint hint. Tech problems aside (scowls at the sound guy), Gretta and Jack charmed yet again, found new fans who were overheard saying "I never heard of them, but goddamn...just fucking WOW!", and gave us their best thumpingly awesome output as always.

 

Local kids, Hussle Club, rounded out the night, and leave it to this unnervingly raw band to crank the intensity up with a set of killer songs managed through broken equipment. It's not like it's unexpected though, seeing as how our pal Jeff notes that "they play as if they are going to break up tomorrow", and frankly, that's exactly what I love about them. Terrence and crew smashed drums, blew out cables and caused the best ruckus that last night could have ever hoped for.

My Gold Mask - Two NYC Shows Next Week

We've hosted 'em, we've debuted their tracks, we've seen 'em in Austin...now, NYC, you need to freaking get on board already, because My Gold Mask are on a mini-tour of the city next week, and we're not listening to any excuses as to why you should be in attendance at one or both of their gigs. Real talk.

 

 

   

Next week, the Chicago duo of Jack and Gretta bring their radness a little further east, when they swing through NYC for a two stop set of performances mid-next septet. 

 

First up, MGM hit Union Hall on Wednesday, April 21 for our pal, Jonny Leather's party. He's got a kickass lineup featuring our beloved band, along with Sunglasses, Lagoon and Neighbors. More details can be found at this link.

 

The following night, My Gold Mask get crushed, er, well they'll give you a reason to call them your latest object of desire, when the monthly Meanred party, Crush, brings together MGM, Hussle Club, Rafter and Free Magic for a Thursday night explosion of punk, rock, dance and disco. It's a virtual melting pot of getting up with the get downs and we're psyched to shake it at this fest next week. More details here.
