Interview: CockNBullKid Matures into Adulthood

I'm pretty pumped for CockNBullKid to release her debut album. I mean, it's only been 27+ months since I first started loving up on her tunes, so with much awaited and baited breath, I've been patient for the freshman full length. Adulthood will see daylight in February of the impending year [read = not soon enough] but we've waited this long, and what's a few more months to hold out for what will surely be a major player in my repertoire. To get ready and get amped for what's to come, chats are in order, and it's Beaston vs Bull in this installment.

CockNBullKid is currently on tour with Marina & the Diamonds and Kele. She's covered tracks by both artists, which you can grab for free here and here respectively. Also be sure to check out her cover of Rui de Silva's Touch Me over on her 'Space. Loving that. Even better, watch CNBK and Gonzales (her album collaborator and producer) doing a live cover of Destiny's Child Bills, Bills, Bills here. Most amazing!

SB: Describe CocknBullKid. I know it's your music moniker, but if you had to classify that term/phrase as a noun, or a genre of music, what would the definition of it be?
CNBK: Crying till you laugh and laughing till you cry.

SB: Talk about your earliest influences in the musical world. Did you grow up playing instruments, listening to mom and dad's old records, or what sparked the notion that "hey I think I need to be making music."
CNBK: It sounds cliche but as long as I can remember I have been into music. My parents don't own a musical bone in their bodies so I'm really not sure. My dad played loads of records round the house, so that probably had some influence. I also went to pentecostal church with  my Mum and younger brother. Music was a big part of that. Asides from that, I have harboured this ambition to be a singer and a writer.

SB: Over the past 2 years, a good deal of buzz has started to flow throughout blogs and online publications about your music. What's your response to the good dose of praise that you've been given for the material already out there?
CNBK: For every gushing review there's one saying your hair is shit or whatever. I try not to take it too seriously. I don't want to sound ungrateful to the people who have supported me though. I'm not really famous yet so I haven't read anything too bad or hyperbolic yet. But let's see what I say this time next year!

SB: Your debut album is coming out in February 2011. Talk about the process...writing, recording, working with Gonzales, etc.... it's been over two years since you first came out with initial cut On My Own, so how has the music evolved from then til now with the new material on the disc?
CNBK: I feel my writing has come a long since I first released On My Own in 2007. I always wanted to do something bigger, the album is quite unashamed and I'm proud of that. I got to work with great people like Gonzales who I clicked with immediately. He helped me to get back my focus for writing lyrics. I worked with Peter from Peter Bjorn and John- the Scandic have a great sense of humour so I hope that came across in the songs we did together. The album has taken a while and at times it was hard but it was never dull. Liam Howe ended up doing the production on most of the tracks. He is a big kid trapped in a mans body. We also clicked really quickly and he's very easy to work with.

SB: What happens next? More writing, recording, performing, etc...
CNBK: The warm up single One Eye Closed is out in the UK on Nov 8, then I go on a nation wide tour with Marina and the Diamonds. Then I do a few dates supporting Kele Okereke. Next single will be out after that then the album in Feb.

Gonzales - I Am Europe (new single & video!)

Patient, we've been, since last getting word of what the eclectically-talented Chilly Gonzales has been getting himself involved with lately. After his residency at Joe's Pub earlier this year, he then went to stage a live two-man performance of Jesus Christ Superstar with Peaches (they're bringing the show here in December) and announced his involvement with the lass and fellow electro-head, Tiga, on a new chess-themed movie collaboration, Ivory Tower. Now, we're back on the Gonzo tip, with a new single headed our way in two short weeks.

I Am Europe is the single, and it's every bit the hushy vocaled intro set upon funky beats and piano licks, before Gonzales leaps in with his signature rap-talks haunting the mid minutes. Ever the showman, the song is an entertaining invasion into your wanting earholes.

Chilly's I Am Europe will be released on August 15 via Boys Noize Records, with remixes from Claude Van Stroke, Djedotronic and Dirty Doering, along with a the original and a capella versions. Get it here.

The video for the track is out now, which also features Gonzo's pal, Tiga, looking majorly faaahhhbulous. Awww...friends.

Peaches: The Wheelchair Show Mini-Doc and NYC Gets Peaches Christ Superstar!

For those of you who follow Peaches closely, you’ll know that recently, whilst performing at the Marés Vivas Festival 2010 in Portugal, she screwed up her ankle big time at the beginning of her set – it was a giant leap from the drum riser in the mammoth ghillie suit that did it...but of course, in true Peaches' style, she finished off the set (including crowd walking!) without a whimper. And the end result? An ankle the size of a melon and a big bad-ass plaster cast around her right leg!

With the Lovebox Weekender in London just two days later, what was she going to do? There’s no way she could cancel!  Ingeniously, Peach got to work on putting together an exclusive set for the London Festival goers – a hilarious performance that will forever be known as The Wheelchair Show.

Watch the mini documentary recounting the tale below (semi-NSFW), then jump after for information on how, when, why and where Peaches will be bringing her Peaches Christ Superstar show (with Chilly Gonzales) to New York City later this year! Best news ever.

Now for the details on Peaches Christ Superstar in NYC...

Peaches will perform the American debut of Peaches Christ Superstar on December 11 at The Concert Hall at The New York Society for Ethical Culture. Her performance with Chilly Gonzales of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim Rice's musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, made its worldwide debut in March in Berlin.

Tickets for Peaches Christ Superstar will be available for fans, via pre-sale on Thursday, July 29 at 10am EST. Watch my twitter timeline on Thursday morning for the pre-sale password and link! If you miss the pre-sale, tickets go on sale to the public Friday, July 30 at 10am EST.

Mega mondo excited!

Cocknbullkid - Cocknbullkid (new name and song!)

No, I didn't slip up and type the artist name and song as the same bit. Anita Blay, formerly known as thecocknbullkid (and also known as a beastly-favorite of ours), decided to freshen up her moniker. So, sans "the", let's introduce ourselves to Cocknbullkid. Also, we're gonna get familiar with a self-titled song that's making this shit-filled day all that much lighter. Thanks girl.

As Blay notes: "I have dropped the ‘the’ from my name. So I’m just Cocknbullkid now. All still one word but not all lower case. So still pedantic but I could be worse." The song is, aptly-titled, Cocknbullkid. The self-referential track comes courtesy of production work from Liam Howe (Marina and the Diamonds' chief producer/writer) and the talented hands of piano-pioneer, Gonzales.

A touch of "Alice in Wonderland-esque" lyrics about taking pills to make ya big and small fit nicely with the light and breezy track.

Yours, mine and hers below.

Peaches Christ Superstar on ARTE (new video!)

ARTE (Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne) is a Franco-German TV network, self-described as a culture channel that aims to promote quality programming especially in areas of the arts. The indie-network need look no further to claim a true artiste feature when sitting down with Peaches to discuss her recent off-then-on again revitalization of Jesus Christ Superstar, swapping her own moniker for the formers.

Sitting down with the European culturists, Peaches describes why she chose the project (along with fellow musician Gonzales), what it means to her, as well as showing exclusive clips from the performance, which ran in late March of this year.

The event drew much criticism for it's subject matter as performed by such an iconically-intriguing visionary, for which most critics dubbed to be offensive and beyond the bounds of normalcy. After being greenlit, the show was then forced to be placed on hold. Unsure of whether or not the show would go on, a major online petition was launched, and eventually the event went on as scheduled.

Please enjoy this rad video and interview exclusive. Major! (additionally, check out her spot with Exberliner)

Beastly Bits #44

I'm almost 100% back in fine form after a rad last week in Austin for SXSW. Sure, my vocals are still strained like I've been on a shouting spree for days, but hey, all in all, it was totally worth it.

That said, many thanks for your patience in my absenteeism. Updates from the fest will be flying at you all day today and through tomorrow. Timeliness...we try.

Gonzales Mixes it Up at Joe's Pub This Week

Good things come in threes, eh? With last night being the third night of Gonzales' month-long residency at Joe's Pub, it was fitting that in addition his own excellent musicalities, he was joined by the master mixing of A-Trak and the world-class clarinetist, David Krakauer. Three rad dudes combining for a spectacular night of entertainment...ahh the power of numbers.

Much like his previous two stints earlier this month, Gonzales rolled through a number of classical pieces, modern re-interpretations, casual chats with the audience and ultimately, the best of what we'd previously seen from the gifted gent.

This week, special guest A-Trak thrilled us with his turntablist's battle with the pianist. Throwing R. Kelly's Fiesta and Clipse's Wamp Wamp into the mix had me both on the edge of my seat and with a permanent grin on my mug. Their entire "jewet" (duets done by Jews, as Chilly likes to classify them) was easily the most intriguing, interesting and ultimately magical moment of any of Gonzo's performances thus far.

Additional highlights included the surprise Krakauer joining Gonzo, along with the latter revisiting his first week rendition of The Police's King of Pain, standing atop the piano.

Gonzales released his Pianist Envy mixtape earlier this week, which you can download for free here. Next Thursday is his final night of his month-long stay at Joe's Pub. Special guest is Princess Superstar. Grab a ticket here.

Gonzales Wets Our Appetite at Joe's Pub Again

If the first two Thursdays of this month are any indication, then I hereby declare February to be now known as Gonzuary. Sure it might not immediately make sense, but if you were lucky enough to catch Gonzales' second performance at Joe's Pub last night, complete with special guest Andrew WK, then you'll fully support the notion of the name change.

Beginning once again, with a set of modernly-interpreted classical numbers, Gonzales captured the immediate attention of a full house. Sharing stories of his current stay in NYC, he took us through a short 4-act play in which he regaled tales of growing up with his parents, potty training and his inevitable rise to "piano genius", as dubbed by his grandfather.

Gonzo entertained with another solo effort before bringing out a staple of the NYC rocking night scene in his good pal, Andrew WK. After a slight technical difficulty, the pair joined up for a traditional French song in which the long-haired lad impressively sung over his counterpart's accompaniment.

After WK left the stage, our weekly entertainer once again launched into his rousing rendition of I Need a Hero with the perfectly played segue into Hotel California serving as the night's "final song". 'Twas not long before the pair emerged again, to join forces on one of the rocker's own tunes.

What amounted next was of the raddest proportions. Watch as Gonzales and Andrew WK shred through a rendition of I Get Wet. (thanks to psamp for the video)

If you missed the first two shows during Gonzales' residency, you still have two more chances to catch him this month. Next week, A-Trak joins him on stage, and Princess Superstar rounds out the residency. More information can be found here.
