Theophilus London (featuring The Dap-Kings) - Calypso Blues (Nat King Cole Cover)

Furthering on as to why I'll always be in Theophilus London's corner, the dude continues to wow with a new take on a classic song, keeping his own originality coursing throughout the cut. Syncing up with Sharon Jones' backers, The Dap-Kings, London tackles Nat King Cole's Calypso Blues in this new cover joint.

Additionally, I realized that I never really got around to posting anything from HARD NYC, so while we're at it, check out some pictures from TL's set here, and below, you can peep a video of he and Jesse Boykins III getting their serious soul on during a live performance of Sorry to Interrupt.

Bad. Ass.

Beastly Bits #120

This weekend is going to be nonstop on the fun tip...tonight, Free Energy and Best Coast play for FREE at the South Street Seaport. Tomorrow is HARD Fest on Governor's Island and Sunday is the icing on a cupcaker of days with Cap N Jazz reuniting at the Williamsburg Waterfront. No Age also plays...also, FREE again.

Know what else is free? Deeeez bits! Some say we're easy...some say we're cheap. I say, we's rad, ya dig?

Here's your LOL-Alert for today. Foxy Brown was arrested for mooning her neighbor. link

Die Antwoord's US Debut EP, 5, Out Now

Rather quietly, Die Antwoord released their US debut EP, 5, last week (July 13). On the flip, if there's one thing that this South African troupe of fireballs personify, is that they are anything but on silent mode when it comes to their music.

While last week, the digital version of 5 was offered up via Cherrytree/Interscope, the hard pressing will see a outlet on July 27, with only 5,000 copies available through selected retailers.

You can stream the EP in full below, and here's your purchase link.

Die Antwoord play HARD Fest this Saturday, July 24 on Governor's Island, followed by a gig at Music Hall of Williamsburg the next night.

Remix M.I.A.'s Steppin' Up and You Could Win Insider VIP tickets to HARD LA!

This is just about to go live (2:00pm EST), but we've got the "few minutes early" scoop on how you can get VIP access to HARD LA! What is this event, you ask...and how does one go about winning such an amazing opportunity? HARD is the underground music festival brought to the surface of major cities, always boasting an increasingly hip lineup. How's that for a one sentence shot at enticing you? Let's read on.

M.I.A. is promoting her upcoming album, /\/\ /\ Y /\ (available July 13 on N.E.E.T. Recordings), and since she's repping a headlining slot at the fest on July 17, what better way to combine the music and the moshing than with a mix-it-up contest!

Details on how to enter the contest and be in the running for the coveted VIP tickets are below. (If you're not a mixer and still want to enjoy some tunes, download the free HARD promo album here, with songs from Crystal Castles, Soulwax, Die Antwoord, Flying Lotus, and more.)

Step up in the club and tool up your remix skills to win insider VIP tickets to HARD LA. Steppin' Up is the adventurous Rusko-produced second track from the singer's upcoming album. M.I.A. will celebrate the album's release by performing at HARD LA on Saturday July 17. M.I.A. and N.E.E.T. Recordings are working with HARD to give you the exclusive opportunity to remix the track. Here's how:

Step 1: Download the Steppin' Up acapella here.
Step 2: Read and agree to the full contest rules.
Step 3: Use the acapella and your own software and instruments to create your remix.
Step 4: Upload your remix to HARD's SoundCloud dropbox and share your track to the public before midnight Friday July 9. Your remix's title must include "HARD LA - M.I.A."

That's it! There's two ways to win: either by getting the most "favorites" on SoundCloud, or by impressing HARD & N.E.E.T.'s private panel of judges!

Die Antwoord Sign to Interscope; Album Due Soon

I'm admittedly a little embarrassed that I love Die Antwoord so much. Strike that...no I'm not. The South African rave-rappers have been on a tear through Stateside festivals and cities, along with continuing building buzz through blogworld by staying interesting, through their unique style and songs.

Don't let their appearance fool you. Ninja, Yolandi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek are the real deal...and if it's any justification, they've just signed with Interscope, so get ready for their album $O$ to take over your listening rounds, as they put it, "fokken soon". While most of the album was released for free last year, the finished, mastered, and sure to be refreshed disc's track listing remains primarily the same.

Die Antwoord will be hitting New York City on July 24, when they join up with HARD NYC on Governor's Island. The weekend prior, they'll do the same out on the west coast for HARD LA.

To promote the upcoming release, Ninja laid in the tattoo chair for 11 interrupted hours and got a sweet back-piece. Watch the time-lapse video of the experience below.

Major Lazer - Bruk Out (Remix by Destructo and Uberzone)

Ready for some action? Cause Destructo is providing us with some hard-hitting radness to close out our workday. The LA dude bowls over Beastonia with a super gnarly fix and mash and now it seems like we're energized for anything that comes our way!

In case you didn't know, Destructo is Gary Richards, the founder of HARD Fest, which completely slapped us around last year, in the best way possible.

The not-to-miss event is making a grand return this year (dates below), but not before I bestow a mixed mash of slickness upon you. Destucto, and his pal Uberzone, took fellow "HARD performer" Major Lazer's Bruk Out to come up with a 5 minute trip of heavy drum beats primed to make you "shake it like that...and drop it down".
