My Gold Mask Hit NYC with 2 Shows in September

And one of them you must definitely attend! The other, well, it's a little more "chi chi" but it speaks volumes on top of the praise we've dosed them with over the past 2 years. Yes, we'll never forget My Gold Mask, the incomparably nice and nifty duo from Chicaggo, when they make it on to the tips of everyone's tongues. We'll just wag our fingers and say, "hey, we knew them when...", and recall that one time, we ate grilled cheese sandwiches, Pringles, and bananas as a late night post-show meal together. Oh memories of CMJ '09.

The first of two late summer shows in NYC takes place at the flagship Phillip Lim store as part of Fashion's Night Out during Fashion Week on Friday, September 10, and the other locks in at Glasslands on Saturday, September 11. So go. You will not regret the decision.

The Fashion Week inclusion is appropriate for this band, as recently Gretta was recognized for being a trendsetter in rock fashion style by Blackbook Magazine, who said "Gretta Rochelle's fleshy voice ranges from milky to primal screams. Her look, much like her sound, is one part electro, one part witch-doctor, one part Indiana Jones adventuress, with face paint and wild eye makeup." Amazing!

Also, you're going to want to tune in to East Village Radio on Thursday, September 9, because no trip to NYC is complete for this couple without hitting up and high-fiving this hand. MGM will come on to Belly of the Beast (8-10pm ET) for an interview and special acoustic performance. If you find yourself strolling the streets of lower Manhattan, swing by the booth and give these kids a handshake. They deserve it.

My Gold Mask - Dancing On My Own (Live Robyn Cover with video!)

Oh man you guys...this is precisely the kind of email I love to get. My Gold Mask, our buddies Jack and Gretta from Chicago, are back in Beastonia with a superb rendition of our gal Robyn's Dancing On My Own. On top of that, we've got video to share of it...AAAAANNND the duo's headed back to NYC later this summer for a show. Just....YES.

Without beating around this beastly bush too much, how's about we toss you some details, and the video.

My Gold Mask played the cover live at Chicago's Hideout on June 26 and had some fans shoot video of it. Then, their pal John LeSanche edited it all together. AMAZING.

MGM play Glasslands on September 11 with Zambri and Twin Shadow. Go! My only request is that during this pop through the city, we definitely get these two in the EVR studio now that I'm a massive huge big radio star. Jokes.....I'm not really. But you know, I sill wanna hit that heat with ya!

Crush: All Hot and Sweaty with Rafter, My Gold Mask and Hussle Club

Let it be known, I am a beast of a sweaty nature, so anything just above freezing point is more than likely to make me get all drenchified. So on a warm April evening, the monthly Meanred party, Crush, got down and dirty in The Loft above Public Assembly, aka, the sweat box. Adding to the heat of the venue was the ridiculously hot lineup of San Diego's Rafter, Chicago's My Gold Mask and New York's own Hussle Club

First up, the west coast's Rafter Roberts chucked out his indie dancerock tunes, jumping from behind the mic and encouraging everyone that his songs are about "sex, love, dancing and animal feelings". The latter of those actually being the name of his latest release on Asthmatic Kitty, his tune, No Fucking Around, is precisely that...no bullshit and raw radness.

Up next, our favorite pair from Chi-town, My Gold Mask, jumped behind their drums and strings to give us a wowin', howlin' set of their best tunes, along with a new jam that we want on our playlists immediately. Hint hint. Tech problems aside (scowls at the sound guy), Gretta and Jack charmed yet again, found new fans who were overheard saying "I never heard of them, but goddamn...just fucking WOW!", and gave us their best thumpingly awesome output as always.

Local kids, Hussle Club, rounded out the night, and leave it to this unnervingly raw band to crank the intensity up with a set of killer songs managed through broken equipment. It's not like it's unexpected though, seeing as how our pal Jeff notes that "they play as if they are going to break up tomorrow", and frankly, that's exactly what I love about them. Terrence and crew smashed drums, blew out cables and caused the best ruckus that last night could have ever hoped for.

Pictures (albeit a bit jankily-sketchy from the rad red lighting) from the evening are here, and check out video of My Gold Mask's performance of Violet Eyes and Hussle Club's set closer, Good Morning, Midnight below.

My Gold Mask - Two NYC Shows Next Week

We've hosted 'em, we've debuted their tracks, we've seen 'em in Austin...now, NYC, you need to freaking get on board already, because My Gold Mask are on a mini-tour of the city next week, and we're not listening to any excuses as to why you should be in attendance at one or both of their gigs. Real talk.

Next week, the Chicago duo of Jack and Gretta bring their radness a little further east, when they swing through NYC for a two stop set of performances mid-next septet.

First up, MGM hit Union Hall on Wednesday, April 21 for our pal, Jonny Leather's party. He's got a kickass lineup featuring our beloved band, along with Sunglasses, Lagoon and Neighbors. More details can be found at this link.

The following night, My Gold Mask get crushed, er, well they'll give you a reason to call them your latest object of desire, when the monthly Meanred party, Crush, brings together MGM, Hussle Club, Rafter and Free Magic for a Thursday night explosion of punk, rock, dance and disco. It's a virtual melting pot of getting up with the get downs and we're psyched to shake it at this fest next week. More details here.

And because it begs repeating...our buddy T-Minus 321 did the most insanely hot remix of My Gold Mask's Violet Eyes earlier this year. I want to cry this is so damn epic. Grab it below if you haven't already.

Beastly Bits #37

Diving right in...big news to tackle later this morning...

...so here is a quick little abridged version of the bits!

Whoever these Strangers in Stereo are sure have quite the SXSW Party lineup going on. Chew Lips, My Gold Mask, Chiddy Bang and more. Can you say rad? Official flyer is here and the RSVP deal is at this link.

Our pal Redlight tossed us a teaser mix of his original material...due out March 16. Stream the slickness here, or jump below for a new tune as well as our favorite mix from him.

Jump Jump Dance Dance talk to Pedestrian...read the interview here, then scroll down for Grum's mix of their track, Show Me the Night. We dig it!

My Gold Mask - Violet Eyes (T-Minus 321 Remix)

I'm not sure I've ever been more excited to debut something in my beastly existence. With but a simple comment nearly a month ago, a dialogue began between myself, one of the raddest up-and-coming mixers in T-Minus 321, and the lovely pair we know as My Gold Mask, concerning a potential remix. Herein lies the truth, the future and the radness.

Here's what we know. My Gold Mask are hotly-tipped to have a breakout year, releasing their A Thousand Voices EP to a ton of blog-love and praise, heading to SXSW where they'll undoubtedly steal your Austin-bound hearts, and generally being two of the most talented individuals we've discovered in the past year.

Enter T-Minus 321, a dude whose name we've rung up a number of times over the course of our 2+ year life in Beastonia. It's no secret that many of his mixes have found a comfy home here within our pages, and rightfully so.

So with a few massive knob twists and tweaks, he's transformed MGM's Violet Eyes in a major way. Long gone is the dramatically-sparse drum-rock original, paving the way for a super-futuristic and funk-filled jawn. The 3:20 mark hits and you enter interplanetary dimensions beyond belief. I never had any doubts that he'd churn out such a killer fix, but little did I know that I'd find an obsession of the raddest beastly proportions.

Get it now and get it good. All optimism that you're going to love this.

My Gold Mask - Violet Eyes (new video!)

Ok, whoa. I love everything about this. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Two of the most charismatically-dynamic performers, and all-around kickass human beings, are Jack and Gretta of Chicago's My Gold Mask. Seriously...I dig everything coming out of camp-MGM. There are my most-favorite addiction.

The pair have just posted up the official Violet Eyes video. It was directed by their pal, Jim Newberry. Shot in both HD as well as with a low-res PixelVision camera, the video is an homage and perfectly-pieced together rush of emotions that plays off the dramatically-intense nature of the song itself. Give it a view now!

Reminder: go buy My Gold Mask's A Thousand Voices EP here. It will legitimately be one of your single greatest purchases all year. Upcoming live dates can also be found here.

Beastly Bits #2

I actually had this drafted and posted three (yes 3!) times yesterday, but some faulty tech issues had me scrap it all and starting over again today. Let's roll.

Breakfast is served. And it's super beefy, because both yesterday and today's bits are included.

Third Man Records will release 2 new Wanda Jackson singles; the first will be a cover of Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good. Jackson plays Brooklyn's Knitting Factory on February 11. Tickets here.

If you fancy yourself down under on Sunday, January 10, then I recommend you check out the Days Like This! festival. The lineup is massive and tickets are still available here.

Musician Kenna has developed the Summit on the Summit program, an initiative that strikes awareness on the clean water crisis. Artists and actors will climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise funds. Santigold started her trek yesterday...follow her progress here.

Avian X unleashed a new remix of her 2009 hit, Dark Circles. The fix comes from Josh Harris and is available as a free download below.

LA-based electro doo-hop trio, Hyper Crush, are currently in the studio. Watch them in action here.

Last week, I exclusively debuted a new My Gold Mask track, which can be found on their stunning new EP, A Thousand Voices. Stream or download the release in full over here.

Want to win tickets to see Zambri, MNDR and Tayisha Busay at Glasslands on January 21? Enter here.

Ellie Goulding wins the BBC Sound of 2010 honor. No surprise here, but most well deserved.

The enigmatic YouTube user, iamamiwhoami, sprung forth with 2 viral videos yesterday. Some say it's an album teaser for Goldfrapp or Christina Aguilera. Either way, my interest is piqued! Watch the stunning clips here.

Check out a video of Ian McCulloch in the East Village Radio studio with Mark Ronson from the night I hosted back in December. Special intro by yours truly. Watch here.
