Village Voice's 10th Annual Siren Fest: The Day That Was...Hot, Rad and Right On

With a lineup boasting emerging acts alongside some of our favorite establishees, this year's Siren Fest drew a massive crowd to the southernmost shores of New York City, via the Coney Island beach and boardwalk. With the temperature wavering around 95 degrees in equally humid conditions, 14 of the best summer-fest worthy acts kept it cool with a blend of unique styles and super sick skills.

Most of the acts we'd seen before, but it was the newcomers that really got us in a righteous mood, namely Screaming Females (which seemed to be the general consensus fest-wide). This 3-piece from New Jersey are young, talented as shit, and we're pining to hear more from them in a live setting.

Overall, it was an excellent day in which we heard a ton of awesome music, hung out and high-fived all of our favorite people, and got inexplicably tanner than we've been in a really long time.

A full collection of images from the day can be viewed here...in the meantime, select shots are below.

The Grates' front-woman, Patience Hodgson, got a makeover, but is she stealing Sia's aesthetic? You be the judge. link

The South Street Seaport Music Fest has Thee Oh Sees, Golden Triangle and So Cow tonight. It's free and starts at 6:30pm. link

Siren Fest 10 is tomorrow, down on Coney Island. Another free fun time and the weather is shaping up nicely. Listen to the EVR preview show here, and get set times at this link.

The Pool Party brings Murder City Devils, Jeff the Brotherhood, Obits and Silverghost to the Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday. Yep, this is a free one too. link

Last night was the premiere of Belly of the Beast on East Village Radio. I debuted tracks from Cut Copy, The Count & Sinden (featuring Mystery Jets), and Jenny Wilson stopped by the booth for an interview and live acoustic performance. Hit the archived show here.

10th Annual Siren Festival Lineup Announced

Over the past few weeks, it's been debated how exactly the 10th Anniversary of Siren Festival, the free and rad Coney Island music bash, lineup would be announced. Some suggested skywriting, fireworks, Lolla-style wordboards and the like. What was deemed best and most efficient, however, was a simple write-up on the Village Voice site...sponsors of the annual summer soirée.

Proving to be in the know on both the up-and-comers, along with the "hey, we've had 'em and we want 'em again" band types, this years fest pays homage to those bands who've already rocked the beach, while keeping current with a bill of bands on the rise.

Prior to this year's July day of fun and sun, no band has ever played Siren twice. That changes this year when Matt and Kim ('07) and Ted Leo ('03) hit the stage again, with new bill-mates Surfer Blood, Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Harlem. Additional acts and DJs will continue to be named as the festival date nears.

Siren Festival is rain or shine on July 17. (Anyone else there in 2006 when Scissor Sisters played in a pretty vicious thunderstorm? That was a fun day.)
